Every product asks something of its user: take a step, reach for a control, interpret a signal, make a decision. Each action may seem insignificant, but together they determine whether an experience feels effortless or demanding, clear or confusing, empowering or restrictive.

 

The kitchen makes this invisible choreography particularly visible. In the 1920s, Lillian Gilbreth studied steps, reaches and repeated movements to reduce unnecessary effort. Her Kitchen Practical reportedly reduced the movements required to prepare a strawberry shortcake from 281 steps to 45. But speed was not the real objective. Gilbreth spoke of creating “happiness minutes”: time returned to the person using the kitchen. 

 

In parallel, Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky designed the Frankfurt Kitchen as one coordinated system in which storage, work surfaces and appliances supported a continuous workflow. Different approaches, one shared insight: when movement, objects and space are designed together, the environment can take on part of the work.

 

Not simply faster. More  human.

Gilbreth did not only want to  accelerate work. She wanted to give back time. 

 

 

 

 

The kitchen as a system.

In 1926 the Frankfurt Kitchengave these ideas physical form. A kitchen designed for less  effort and more joy.

Today, the environment is larger

The contemporary kitchen no longer ends at walls and countertops. It extends across appliances, utensils, physical controls, screens, interfaces, light and sound signals, connected services and automated routines. These elements may be developed by different teams and organisations, but the user does not experience them separately. The user experiences one environment.

 

That changes the role of design. Hardware must feel appropriate to the action. Interfaces must make options and consequences understandable. Signals must communicate state without adding distraction. Services must provide continuity across products and over time. If these elements contradict one another, the user becomes responsible for connecting them mentally. The environment stops reducing work and begins creating more of it.

 

A connected experience is therefore not primarily a technological achievement. It is a human one. It begins by understanding what people are trying to accomplish, where uncertainty appears and which effort can be transferred from the user into the system. It then requires every element to play a clear role in the larger relationship.

It no longer ends at walls and  countertops. Kitchens now  contain an increasing number  of digital interfaces and tools.

Every system must play its part.

Hardware, utensils and  interfaces might be designed separately. But the user  experiences them as one  interconnected environment.

The moment of decision

Every experience eventually arrives at a point of truth: the moment when the user must decide what to do next. Is the appliance ready? Has the action been confirmed? Which control should be used? Can an automated recommendation be trusted? What happens if something goes wrong?

 

At that moment, every earlier design decision becomes tangible. The position of a control, the shape of a handle, the hierarchy of information, the timing of a signal and the behaviour of a service all influence the next action. Good design does not remove every decision. It makes the right decision understandable at the right time.
