Women in Design
International Women's Day 2021
When you look at women's role in design, you will find names of well-known women-designers and their significant contribution to what the industry is nowadays. You will also find facts about women underrepresentation and gender inequality within the industry.
Both women and men have written the design history. Yet, there have been times for women where it has been difficult for them to be seen and heard within the industry. The fact remains that there is still a disparity between the genders when it comes to wages, senior roles, and representation.
The good news is that much is changing nowadays. Even though gender parity and equal pay are still an issue, there are better prospects for women.
According to the 2019 AIGA Design Census, 61% of designers working today are women, the rate of female creative directors across the industry rose from 3% in 2008 to 29% in 2020. This shows positive momentum and an opportunity for more progress. With more than half of the industry being women, the chance to bring about change is even more significant.
