UX Design Forum
The Future Interactive Experience
Recently, two of our designers from the Shanghai studio attended the 2018 Alibaba UCAN UX Design Forum held in Hangzhou, China. The conference brought a multitude of shared knowledge and discussions about cutting-edge design concepts and practical experience in variable commercial environments consisting of dry goods. Thanks to Alibaba Design for creating a platform for linking designers to communicate and make active efforts to promote the industry upgrade!
Today, "design" goes beyond traditional industrial and graphic design, it has extended to interaction design, service design, business design, and many other disciplines. “Design Thinking" has been applied in various fields. People's expectations for design have increased even more, as we wish to solve multiple problems and explore future possibilities in our respective fields. Because of this, the improvements of the design industry are noticeable from the inside out.
What The Future Looks Like
What will the future bring for Interaction Design? Multi-scenario, intelligence, customization, content diversification, collaborative design, and technology innovation are the answers given by Ali at the UCAN Conference. New retail strategies integrate online and offline channels. AI Luban designed 400 million posters during the "Double 11" festival in 2017. The "Thousand Faces" recommendation system can customize Taobao content that users see. Short videos enrich the original text and image-based product content. Ali and Hanyi launched the first smart font designed by AI.
Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Designers?
Regarding the long-term question of “will AI replace designers?”, Alibaba has voiced their opinion. They believe that technology, design, and experience complement each other. Technology is meant to support the experience, though before its application the fundamental question we need to discuss is “what experience do we wish to create?” Right now, AI can already solve the basic problems of production capacity and experience, so in the future, designers shall show their true competence in in their creativity and thinking skills.
The Japanese design icon Naoto Fukasawa was also invited as a guest speaker to share his design philosophy with the conference. He shares one of his recent projects for Mobike as an example to explain that design is not limited to a single product but is necessary to study the use scenarios and surrounding lifestyles, such as how the users are dressing and where the bike is parked on the street. How can we bring products to our life that retain classic design elements while balancing technology and innovation? Design has evolved from product design to environment design and now to atmosphere design. History, culture, and customs shape our environment, though the relationship between environment and products works rather like a puzzle, designers need to find the outline of missing pieces then design the product along this outline to fit into the sophisticated environment. By doing this, Design creates harmony.
