Sparking the Passion
Go West, Young Man
The first time Jens came to China was back in 2008 for a friend’s wedding. It was such an amazing experience that he began thinking about working and living in Asia. Four years ago, he got offered a job opportunity in China and he took it without thinking twice. Afterwards he moved to Shanghai with his wife and started out on his new journey.
Jens has been working in the creative industry for more than a decade. The fields he got involved in are quite diverse and taught him a lot about being flexible and thinking outside of the box. Before studying industrial design, Jens was trained and worked as a joiner, as at that time he was rather looking for some practical experience than just believing in theoretical knowledge as preparation for his design career. Same as many other industrial designers, Jens is very interested in how products are made, including the latest material technologies and in how and where the product will be used later, as these factors are the basis for the development of durable and innovative products.
Stepping into Big Projects
Some of the projects Jens were involved in have earned him many international awards, for example the Red-Dot Award, the IF Award, the “Good Design Turkey,” as well as the German Design Award nominee. With that being said, our studio only learned of the news recently – as is fairly typical – Jens has never been one to show off and instead likes to keep focused on the next project.
Jens has many stories to share when it comes to design. “It is still an unforgettable moment when I saw my model or prototype for the first time after the first phases of sketching and first 3D development. It is like meeting an old friend which hasn’t been seen for quite a while, but who seems very familiar once again.” Jens described to us his very first exciting moment with prototyping, which is a crucial phase during the any design – prototype, testing, refining and repeat once again – as many would say it is an iterative process.

Never Stop Exploring
The design fields these days are becoming more and more interdisciplinary. As for Jens, he is not only working on purely industrial design projects – he thinks it is good that it offers him experience and different points of view, keeping his mind flexible and fresh. Today at TEAMS, our work is as diverse as ever including User Experience, Industrial Design, Interaction Design and Brand Experience, which is a great platform for designers to collaborate and celebrate creativity together.
Always on the lookout to learn more and explore new areas – this might be Jens’ secret to maintaining his passion over the years.
